Clinical Finding of the Patients with Welder¢¥s Lung in Shipyard

Abstract
Seventy patients who were occupied as the electric welder in shipyard and were suspected the occupational lung disease through the screening test, were carried out the detailed examination such as chest x-ray, pulmonary function test, electrocardiography, blood pictures and the other necessaring tests to confirmed the pneumoconiosis from January 1971 to March 1982 in Industrial Accident Hospital, Catholic Medical College.
The severities of the pneumoconiosis were classified by International Classification of Radiopraphs of Pneumoconiosis and were compared with age, duration of dust exposure and other labaratory datas.
The results were as follows;
1. It may be considered causing the small number of the subjects that the distribution of welder¢¥s lung did not show the significant difference according to the age and the duration of dust exposure.
2. The small rounded opacities were observed 58.5£¥ with p type, 39.0£¥ with q type and 2.5£¥ with r type respectively.
3. The difference of the average vital capacity between the suspected pneumoconiosis and the pneumoconiosis with category 1/0 or more severe was statistically significant, however the ratio of the measured value to the predicted vital capacity were within normal limit.
4. The cases less than 80£¥ of the ratio of the measured value to the predicted vital capacity were more in the progressed pneumoconiosis than in the mild cases.
5. One second volume (FEV1.0) and its ratio did not show the significant difference according to the severity of pneumoconiosis.
6. The cases less than 80£¥ of the ratio of the measured value to the predicted maximal breathing capacity were more in the progressed pneumoconiosis than in the mild cases.
7. The cases more than 500 mill/§§ of erythrocytes were 37.1£¥ of the total subjects and the cases more than 16.0£¥ of hemlogobin concentration were 15.7£¥.
8. All of the patients with welders lung were complaint breathlessness with the various severity, while 70.0£¥ and 58.6£¥ of the patients were suffered by excessive suputum and chronic coughing.
